A grandmother gets a maternity leave to take care of her granddaughter

Pilar Portero, 61, has become the first grandmother to get a maternity leave of 16 weeks to care for her granddaughter. It is a right that has been included in the law since 2009, to grant the leave to the person who is in charge of the child, but few people know it, so knowing Pilar's case can encourage other families to request it in similar situations .

A court in Zaragoza has recognized the right to take care of her five-year-old granddaughter, whose mother died in a traffic accident in January last year and her father has shown disinterest in taking care of her.

The grandmother in this case acts as a mother and that a judge recognizes that right is a great thing. Now you can take her and bring her from school and enjoy this time to devote to her. You also have the right to an economic benefit and when the period of withdrawal ends, you can request a reduction in working hours. Logically, the breastfeeding and delivery permit is not recognized.

For more details, according to the Civil Code in Royal Decree 295/2009, it is allowed to enjoy this right to family members who have the guardianship of a minor.

Although the little girl still cannot understand the media fuss that has been generated around her grandmother, Pilar has said that she will save the press clippings "So you know that your grandmother and grandfather have fought for her" and also recommends other grandparents or family members who are in the same situation to fight for this right.

Of course it is excellent news, because it is definitely a measure for the benefit of the girl.
