The quality of the mother's sleep habits influences the type of parenting towards her teenage children

When we become mothers, one of the things that changes in our lifestyle is sleep habits. In the first years we learn to survive with little rest and we are gradually recovering those valuable hours of sleep as our children grow.

And this is important to do, because a study found that The quality of sleep habits that teenage mothers have influences the type of parenting they carry. Just as sleeping well brings many benefits to our body, sleeping a few hours affects the stage of our life in which we find ourselves. A good night of restful sleep and enough rest will make us have a better performance and attitude the next day.

Naturally, lack of rest is something that can affect us in many ways, and this recent study found that in the case of women who are mothers of teenagers, not getting enough sleep could cause them to fall into a very permissive parenting style. .

Through a statement published by the University of Illinois, where the study was conducted, researchers expose the link between maternal rest and foster or permissive parenthood in late adolescence.

To analyze the relationship between rest and this type of parenting, 234 mothers sleep habits data were compared with surveys conducted on their teenage children, whose average age was 15 years. In them, the young people described the type of upbringing of their mothers, according to how they reacted to different situations.

According to the study, Mothers who have inadequate sleep habits tend to be less demanding and act inconsistently when it comes to discipline.. This occurs because they may be more irritable, not attentive enough or are too exhausted.

On the contrary, those mothers who slept what was necessary or even managed to fall asleep more easily, were less likely to fall into that kind of permissive parenting, and managed to maintain a better discipline towards their children.

Now, this does not mean that if we sleep more we will be better mothers, nor does it mean that we advise having an authoritarian parenting style (since even one study questions that this is the most suitable for adolescents). It simply is a study that shows us the importance of a good rest and its relationship with the way we educate our children, because just as a bad night influences without enough rest in the rest of our activities, it does the same when it comes to parenting.
