More than half of single-parent families in Spain are at risk of poverty

If it is already difficult for a couple to meet family expenses, for parents who raise their children alone, it becomes an obstacle course. In Spain, more than half of single parents, or what is the same with only a householder (in 80% of cases the mother), are at risk of poverty.

This is what the VI report on "Monomarentality and employment" presented by the Adecco Foundation on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which states that the 50.1% of women in charge of a single-parent family with one or more dependent children are at risk of poverty. This is almost 22 points above the rest of household types, in which the risk of poverty is 28.6%.

Andalusia and Murcia are the most affected autonomous communities, with a rate of 35.7% and 31.8%, respectively. On the other hand, Navarra and the Basque Country are the regions with the lowest incidence of poverty, with a rate of 9.6% and 10.6%, respectively.

A 47% of the total of 420 mothers surveyed, that is almost half, live with less than 600 euros per month. Almost 7 out of 10 female heads of household are long-term stops.

51% of the respondents are unemployed (33%) or work in the submerged economy (18%) and only a third receive some type of benefit or subsidy. The rest has already exhausted all the aid to which he was entitled.

What does it mean to be at risk of poverty or social exclusion?

According to the EU, a person is at risk of poverty or social exclusion when at least one of these three assumptions occurs:

  • Income does not reach the poverty line (684 euros)

  • Suffer severe material deficiency (When you cannot pay the rent, the mortgage or the bills, the heating, you do not have a car, washing machine, telephone or you cannot go on vacation even one week a year)

  • When he lives in a home with very low labor intensity (where over 18 years of age non-students have worked less than 20% of their work potential in the last year).

Single-parent families, the fastest growing in Spain

There are 1,964,900 single-parent families, 3.6% more than last year, What equals to 11% of households In our country.

Similar figures are those produced by the Report on the State of Poverty presented by the EAPN (European Anti-Poverty Network), which ensures that the 53.3% of single-parent families are at risk of poverty, being the type of family unit with the highest danger rate.

55.6% of these households cannot afford a vacation trip even one week a year, while 16.6% are unable to keep their homes at an adequate temperature, which is called energy poverty.
