A terminally ill six-year-old child has raised more than one million euros to help children who die of pneumonia in poor countries

In this Christmas season we are especially sensitive to emotional stories, but this is undoubtedly a spectacular solidarity story that puts a finishing touch to the year 2016. Tijn is a six-year-old boy who has provoked a brutal revolution in the Netherlands. He has terminal cancer and one last wish he set out to fulfill. And no, he doesn't ask for anything for him. His desire is to help children who die of pneumonia in the world.

He launched a solidarity campaign on Wednesday with the idea of raising 100 euros and it has been raised in two days more than one million euros (and going up) to help children who die in poor countries before their fifth birthday due to preventable causes.

An inevitable death against preventable deaths

Tijn suffers from an incurable brain stem cancer, a very rare tumor that is diagnosed between 15 and 20 children in the world every year. There is nothing that can be done to save his life, it is believed that at most he has a year of life, but his attitude is inspiring.

He knows that his illness has no cure and with just six years It has been proposed to save millions of children in the world from deaths that can be avoided. "The majority of children infected with pneumonia in poor countries do not reach their fifth birthday. That is why we are here to fight," said the father.

"It could be worse, some children do not live until age six," Tijn

Record collection

The campaign is similar to the Ice Bucket Challenge. Tijn challenged the Netherlands to donate a euro for painting nails. Every time he paints nails, one euro is donated, but everyone can participate. You paint your nails, donate a euro to the foundation you share the photo under the hashtag #lakaan (painted) and you nominate three people to do the same.

Those who do not want to paint their nails can donate 10 euros directly through the Internet to the 3FM Serious Request Foundation, a multimedia initiative to raise funds for the International Red Cross for Christmas.

In a few hours he had raised almost half a million euros and has raised (until the moment of writing this post 1,222,642 euros), became a trending topic on Twitter (#Tijn) and numerous personalities joined his cause. A beautiful and at the same time sad story to end the year.
