A school changes punishments for meditation sessions (and the results are surprising)

Ejecting children from class or leaving them without recess is a deterrent measure used as punishment in many schools. But are these types of punishments really useful? In themselves they do not serve to correct a bad behavior, but rather as a form of reaction to the fear that causes them to punish them again.

For elementary school students of W. Robert Coleman of Baltimore, being expelled from class I am not something to fear. Because they have a room where they are made meditation sessions in which they teach children to practice meditation and conscious breathing exercises, while encouraging them to talk about their behavior.

The meditation classrooms were created thanks to a program carried out in collaboration with a local non-profit organization called the Holistic Life Foundation, which is responsible for training teachers, parents and professionals to incorporate in the day-to-day life of practical children Relaxers such as yoga, mindfulnes, breathing exercises and techniques to improve attention.

They intend to give students the necessary tools to release stress, be more empathetic and compassionate, and therefore, improve their behavior. They also resort to meditation as a form of intervention when it is necessary to address some discipline problem.

The plan has given good results. Since it has been implanted in this Baltimore school, there have been no more expulsions.

Should yoga and meditation be taught in schools?

Some schools are already putting it into practice in 5-10 minute sessions in which children perform breathing exercises and basic meditations, also some simple yoga practices.

They help reduce the anxiety and stress of the little ones, subject to numerous obligations in their day to day. It also improves concentration and helps the nervous system, as well as helping to relieve headaches and stomach problems.

Practicing this type of exercise often causes children to end up internalizing the practices and applying them to any situation in their daily lives. When they feel overwhelmed, frustrated, when they argue with a partner or have a problem at home. When they get angry, and are about to explode, they learn to stop and breathe deeply to better control your emotions, which is basically the root of behavioral problems in children ...
