A father suffering from ALS witnessed the birth of his baby by videoconference

For a father, witnessing the birth of his son is one of the most exciting moments of his life. For Carlos, it was a priority, and although his illness prevented him from leaving the house, it did not prevent him from fulfilling his dream. When his wife went into labor, at the Hospital October 12 in Madrid everything was prepared so that this father suffering from ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) could witness the birth of his baby by videoconference.

It is the first time that this type of audiovisual connection is made in the Community of Madrid from a health center to the family home with the objective that the father of the baby could follow live the delivery of his wife.

A computer and a webcam and a computer technical team from the center made it possible for Carlos to accompany his wife Ruth at such a special moment. In fact, October 12 is a hospital that encourages and favors the presence of the father's delivery, even when it comes to scheduled C-sections.

For actions such as this one, it obtained in 2010 the 'Initiative for the Humanization of Birth and Lactation Assistance' (IHAN), granted by UNICEF and the World Health Organization.

The boy was born on July 23 at 7.41 hours and weighed 3.4 kilos, and both he and his mother are already at home with the father.
