Child seats misused in the car, more common than we think

Child restraint systems are essential on any car trip, however short. Its use helps to save lives, but the problem is that they are not always used correctly. Child seats misused in the car are more common than we think.

According to an expert of the Seat brand, 63% of children do not travel correctly when driving by misuse of the seat. Sitting the child is not enough. We must ensure that the chair is well placed. Before starting check that:

  • All children under 1.35 cm tall They must always use an approved restraint system adapted to their weight and height.

  • The chair is well anchored to the car. All new cars come with Isofix anchorage, an anchoring system with three fastening points, which allows the chair to be fixed to the car body so that it is well attached to the seat. If the car is old, the chairs have fastening systems to use the seat belt as an anchor.

  • It is safer to place the chair facing back, that is in the opposite direction to the march for as long as possible. There are models specially designed for this use.

  • Children are safer in the backseat of the car. If the chair is placed in the front seat (as of October 1 it will be prohibited) the passenger's passenger airbag must be deactivated.

  • The child has well placed harnesses: must be adjusted to the baby's size so that it does not squeeze but is not loose. They should be tense at the level of the clavicle and the pelvis and check that the child does not take out the arms.

  • Ask for advice when buying and read the user manual: before purchasing the chair, find out about the safety of the model, the way of installation and do not forget to read the instructions for use to place it properly.
