Carnival: some butterfly wings

We wanted to complete the beautiful butterfly makeup we've seen this morning with some simple wings for the butterfly costume that we can make at home With very little material. The wings we see in the picture I made last year for my daughter who was then one year and few months old.

To make the wings we need a thick cardboard of the color that we like the most, which we will have to cut with the symmetrical silhouette that we see in the photograph to give it the shape of wings. If we choose a light cardboard color we can draw the preferred ornaments with colored markers.

In my case I chose some flowers delineated with glitter (to be honest, I was in a hurry and it was a fairly simple and concise decoration), although they can be colored, striped, stars, hearts, a framed border ... and we can combine colors and sizes of the drawings that decorate the wings. It is best to place ornaments on both sides of the wings, because both sides are visible.

Drawings are allowed on the cardboard itself, cut out of other cards in different color that we paste on our wings, and it is very good purpurin to mark the edges, or pens with glitter ... to decorate.

The way we attach the wings to the body of the child can vary, you can make braces that are attached to the shoulders, as a backpack, for which it would be necessary to make two horizontal grooves in each wing. The grooves of my butterfly wings are vertical because I introduced a velcro strap that fit around the girl's body.

In any case, the distance between the grooves that will support the tape or the elastic must be sufficiently separated so that they do not break easily. To give you an idea of size of these wings for children from one to two years, in its central part it measures 18 centimeters high (the highest part of the wings at the top is 32 cm.) and 30 centimeters wide (a horizontal line at the height of the grooves).

Cardboard wings are fragile almost like those of a real butterfly. If you plan to put them on children over two years to last a few hours, better choose a cardboard that is more resistant and paint or line it to our liking.

As we see, with very few details we can create a beautiful butterfly carnival costume: a well-made face, a tunic or mesh and t-shirts of the same color, these wings as a complement, and to fly!
